Aztreonam is a synthetic monocyclic beta-lactam antibiotic belonging to the class of monobactams. Structurally, it contains a beta-lactam ring fused to a thiazolidine ring. Chemically, it is (2S,3S,4S)-2-[(2-amino-4-thiazolyl) [(2S,3S)-2-methyl-4-oxo-1-sulfo-3-azetidinyl]carbamoyl]-1,3-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid. Aztreonam is stable to degradation by most beta-lactamases and exhibits selective activity against Gram-negative bacteria.Aztreonam is used primarily for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible Gram-negative bacteria, including Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
